Black
No surprise here, but although black and black accents have been huge forever, it's the broader strokes of black that are in now - entire rooms, painted floors, kitchen cabinets. Not to disagree with Ms. Reeves, but I'm putting my bet on navy for 2011. I bet we start seeing more and more of it.
White Painted floors and white walls
From modern to cottage country rustic, white painted floors paired with white walls is in now. Look at any blog [this one included] this look is everywhere. But how bold are you to paint your hardwood floors?
Patterned couches
Graphic and bold or muted and minimal, doesn't matter, as long as it has a pattern, your couch is of the moment.
Multi-faceted light fixtures
Gone [but not forgotten] are the barrel shades and simple fixtures of the past few years. In now, anything multifaceted with a slight industrial feel.
Exposed seams and assemblies
This is the one trend I really hadn't made a note of, until it was pointed out. Then I realized I have been seeing it everywhere. Upholstery is no longer neat and clean, make way for the softer deconstructed look of exposed seams. And don't worry about covering up the backs of beautifully sculted wood chairs, show off what they look like.
Statement chairs
This one is not really new, it is my strong belief [see here] that every house has one really great occasional chair, whether it's modern or traditional. A nod to the greats of furniture design or just a unique chair with really great lines, every house needs one statement chair.
Felted Round chair cushions
Very Parisian. A smaller version of a pouf, you'll see lots of these around, even if they are just stacked in a corner.
Gallery Walls
Refined or cluttered, gallery walls are in. Glad I hopped on that train before it left.
Overdied and aged rugs
I LOVE this look. Again with a slight Parisian feel, bold colour and nubbly texture.
And the top looks for 2011:
New Trad
Think traditional furniture with classic and ornate lines mixed with bold and modern fabrics.
Urban Country
A mix of modern and rustic - this has been THE look for the last few years. Think limited colour palette, rustic touches with modern lines.
Soft Modern
Leggy furniture, woods and creams and warmer colour palettes with cool touches. This is my look - mid century modern updated.

I typically don't think in terms of trends, but I think they got it right -- these styles are definitely what I've seen around the blogosphere for some time now. Do you have a favorite?
ReplyDeleteBrandi - this year it seems that all the trends are on par with my own personal style - all except anything traditional. I'm loving the light fixtures and the soft modern look - however, I'm actually really into the overdied rugs and would love to make them an addition to my living room. My current ones need the heave-ho.
ReplyDeletegreat post...couldn't agree with you more on the navy call...
ReplyDeleteGreat coverage Sarah! you so should have won the Elte gift card!!
ReplyDeleteSarah,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Andrew Metrick and I'm from Elte. I'm not sure if we've ever met. My brother Jamie and I are the fourth generation of the family business. That was me running around with the microphone to people who had questions for Lynda. (I never knew how political selecting members of the audience could be. Boy they turn on you fast.) Anyway, I first just wanted to thank you for coming to the event. It was a great turnout so thank you for coming. I hope you had great time. Next up, I wanted to just compliment you on your unbelievably thorough blog post. For any of your readers who weren't able to attend the evening, I think it's safe to say you captured the themes of the presentation more than well in your post. Amazing use of photos. Please be sure that you say Hello the next time you're at Elte or Ginger's. I'd be more than happy to come say Hi.
All the best Sarah and keep up the great work.
Andrew.
Thanks everyone for the great comments and a special Hi to Andrew. Working a crowd is tough, especially a design crowd. Great work.
