My father is a third generation Canadian Farmer - running our family farm in Southwestern Ontario. Supporting our farming communities and local food is very important to me. Farming is a tough business, a rigorous trade and a necessesity to the health and well being of the public - but unfortunately, it is a dying profession.
I am a big believer in buying local, buying domestic, and supporting your area farmers. Not only will this boost your local economy, you will help support an essential trade and profession in your community. Read labels and stickers - consider local apples instead of those imported from half way around the world. Sure, those apples from another country are likely cheaper than domestic ones - that is usually related to two things: lower working wages and demand. If everyone made an effort to buy local - local produce will slowly start to drop in cost, as farmers are now making profits.
The internet is a helpful tool to find out more information on the Agricultural or Farming Association in your area. For those of you in Ontario - please check out Foodland Ontario and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture for more on our local farmers.
